Hey everyone!

I'm making some Skyrim mods that I am planning to heavily incorporate time, celestial elements, ritual magic, etc. And would like to make them lore friendly, and actually educational about the Elder Scrolls history.I've done a lot of wiki reading and bookmarking, but have yet to find any definitive resources about the stars, planets, and other astronomy of the Elder Scrolls universe (if a definitive resource even exists!:)Could anyone here give me a crash course in the stars and sky of Elder Scrolls?

I feel like this was a dramatically underused aspect in Skyrim that could be amazing. Your question is a bit vague, so info dump incoming. I've been writing a big huge document of all the lore I could find, starting from the beginning (which is a bigger problem than you might think; sources are contradictory, especially The Annotated Anuad is ridiculously unreliable - I've had to write a separate appendix on it). Here's a selection from the first chapter. In the beginning.Though the details vary with each culture and religion, all legends of the beginning of existence which have been passed down speak of two entities who appeared in the Void and soon found themselves in conflict.

This Void is the name applied to the dimensions outside of the known realms of Aurbis, the Universe. In this Void, the brothers Anu (stasis) and Padomay (change) appeared. Their interplay created Nir, by whom both brothers were very taken. But Nir had only eyes for Anu, much to the chagrin of Padomay, who bitterly left them both.

When he returned, he found Nir pregnant and once again Padomay professed his love for her. Unfortunately, Nir confirmed that she belonged to Anu. Padomay flew into a rage and beat her. When Anu returned, he saw the abuse Nir was suffering by the hand of his brother, so he fought to defend her. Victorious, he cast Padomay outside Time itself.Unfortunately for Anu and Nir, it was too late. Nir managed to give birth, but then died of her wounds.

Anu, grieving, retreated and slept his days away. The dreamworld: A new beginningThe dreamworld that Anu entered was once more an empty Void. But this time Anu had to understand himself. In order to be able to look inside he created Anuiel, who was the soul of all things much like Anu was the god of all of his creation.

Anuiel, being the soul of all things, manifested himself as the universe we know as the Aurbis. However, the Aurbis was an unfamiliar and chaotic place. For the sake of getting everything in order, there needed to be a framework such as Time. And thus the clash of order and chaos gave birth to the first god: the Dragon God of Time, Auri-El, who also goes by the name of Akatosh. With the birth of Auri-El, Time itself kicked off. Now that the Aurbis was able to become structured, other universal concepts began to manifest themselves as deities and these are the divines in all the different pantheons, mostly with a single Dragon God of Time as leader of the divines.Another aspect of Anuiel was the Trickster, Lorkhan, who convinced the et'Ada to build Mundus, eight Aedric planets in all.

But Lorkhan knew very well that Mundus was a profane creation with many limits and thus the domain of Sithis. The creation of the chaotic and limited plane of Mundus threw the Aurbis into chaos. This chaos caused the death of many aspects of Anuiel and the eight planets were all destroyed. Some, however, survived. Magnus, the architect of the mortal plane of Mundus and the god of Magic, managed to see through Lorkhan's trickery and escape the destruction by fleeing to Aetherius, the Immortal Plane. His fleeing was so violent that it tore a hole in the sky itself, allowing the light of Aetherius to shine through.

This is now Nirn's sun. For this reason, the sun is also called Magnus, for it was caused by him. Others that fled with Magnus are called the Children of Magnus, or the Magna Ge. Their flight caused the holes that we see as the stars. It is thanks to these holes in the fabric of Mundus that the glory of Magnus shines through and saturates Mundus, thus allowing magic to exist. The people of the now-sunken continent of Yakuda called Anu and Padomay by different names, namely Satak, the Snake who came Before, and Akel, its hungry stomach. The worlds rested in the scales of Satak with no space to exist, so they put out a call to be saved. Akel heard this call and made itself known. Satak gave into the hunger and began eating, making room for all creation.Eventually Akel caused Satak to bite its own heart, and Satak died.

Elder Scrolls The Serpent

Shedding its own skin, Satak merged with Akel, forming Satakal, the God of Everything.Satakal continues to eat itself even now, once in a while eating all of Creation so that it may be birthed anew. Some spirits, however, learned to dodge the mouth of Satakal and know how to stride between the worldskins that Satakal sheds every cycle. These are the deities of the Redguard pantheon. The Yokudan version calls Lorkhan by the name of Sep and pictures him as a Second Serpent who assists Tall Papa Ruptga (Akatosh) in helping the other spirits survive the hunger of Satakal.

Tall Papa had created the stars as beacons so that each time Satakal would devour creation, the spirits would know where to jump in order to dodge Satakal's devouring mouth. But Sep was made by Tall Papa from shedded skins of the past incarnations of Satakal and so Sep inherited some of Satakal's hunger. Sep would sometimes eat the spirits he was supposed to save from being eaten in the first place, but Tall Papa would then just reach inside Sep and take out these spirits once more.Eventually Sep got really tired of all the helping. He gathered the rest of the skins from Satakal's previous incarnations and balled them up.

He then convinced the other spirits that rather than dodging Satakal's mouth, they would be better off living on this ball – an idea that was met with enthusiasm. But after some time, the spirits started dying because they were too far removed from the reality that is Satakal.Unfortunately for these spirits, the beacons that Tall Papa had created were too far away so they begged Tall Papa Ruptga to take them back. But Ruptga refused and said that they had to find their own way back. And if they died before that happened, it would have to be their offspring that would have to find their way. As punishment, Ruptga then squashed Sep, who now wanders the sky in his dead skin in an attempt to eat the stars. This is but two interpretations of the same event, and no doubt this will spawn a big discussion because (as mentioned before) sources are contradictory and it's not easy for scholars to decide which writings to take for true.Best you can do is take your questions to. There are greater scholars there than I could ever hope to be.

This all together is Aurbis, the TES universe. It is made of two cosmic forces known as Padomay and Anu. In time Anu would transition into Anui-El and then Auri-El. In turn Padomay would become Sithis. In Aurbis exist Oblivion, The Void, Aetherius, and Mundus. Lorkhan with the assistance of the Auri-El aligned et'Ada created the plane of Mundus and in turn Nirn.

Lorkhan became the moons, Masser and Secunda. And the Aedra became the planets that surround Nirn. The Void exists as everything and nothing before the creation of Oblivion and the et'Ada. It is Sithis' domain. Oblivion is compiled of various planes, 16 ruled by a Deadric Prince each. It is suggested that Mundus was Mehrunes Dagon's plane until he was banished by mortals.

The inverse of Oblivion is Aetherius, it is presided over by the Aedra. The Ayleids believed that the stars were linked to Aetherius and were a grand source of magic in Mundus.
